High Efficiency Gas Furnaces What is “high efficiency”?Simply put, the more energy a furnace keeps in your home for your comfort is efficiency. A standard furnace being built right now is 78% efficient (the minimum standard). A high efficiency furnace is one that is 90% efficient or higher. How does it work? A typical older furnace, or current standard furnace, takes air from inside your home, combines it with natural gas, and burns it. The hot exhaust is passed though a series of metal passages, called the heat exchanger. The exhaust goes up the chimney, and can be seen coming out of your house. The water vapor in the hot exhaust is the “smoke” seen on those cold winter days coming from your chimney. A Carrier high efficient furnace takes its air for combustion (burning) from outside, keeping your conditioned air in the house. Then it combines that air with natural gas, and burns it. The hot exhaust that goes up the chimney on a standard furnace are passed through a second series of passages (heat exchanger), and then sent to the outdoors. This keeps approximately 12-16% more heat from the burning gas available to heat your home. The exhaust is too cool to rise though a normal chimney, so these units are vented in PVC. What else can make me more comfortable? Proper humidity levels (see Humidifiers), zoned heating, and integrated control systems (Carrier’s Infinity Control, for example) can all help make a home more comfortable. You also should treat the air in the house to remove the harmful particles that can live in a home. See the Indoor Air Quality section for more. Carrier’s Infinity FurnaceCarrier’s top furnace is the Infinity. It is up to 96% efficient on its gas use, plus it is very electrically efficient. In fact, it has the lowest total operating cost of any gas furnace being made today. It also offers superior comfort. It uses two stages of heat, to keep the home warm, without the usual dips and rises in temperature. Combined with an intelligent blower system, that only deliver the amount of air needed, most homes find the temperature rarely dips below the 1 degree in any area of the home. The Infinity also has Carrier exclusive ComfortHeat™ technology, for the ultimate in performance, comfort and home heating.
